About 65% of the clients who come into our store know what a ticket pocket is. If you’re in the minority, it is an additional pocket on the exterior, right side of the jacket just above the standard, larger pocket. It is smaller in size and believe it or not, held tickets for the train or the theater as it was more accessible whilst seated.

A few years ago, after finding an example on a vintage Italian sport coat, we saw an unusual ticket pocket. It was just inside (and partially outside) a patch pocket. We developed the size and shape for it and implemented it into our custom program.

The jacket above has what is called “tasce a pignata” or “pot pockets.” These are patch pockets that are shaped like a whiskey snifter, a witch’s cauldron or a Burgundy wine glass. They are slightly smaller at the top and oblong in shape to follow the wearer’s hips. You’ll notice the additional ticket pocket on the left (or the wearer’s right) sitting just above the larger pocket.

We roughly sized it to a cell phone (as phones keep changing size, this is difficult to exact) and since it is anchored as a shallow pocket is better for heavier things like keys as well. Along the way, Kirsten started referring to this pocket as a “kangaroo pocket.” For obvious reasons.

It is not a normal attribute to see in the custom clothing world and has become something of a signature for our sport coats. Not every client selects the option, but there isn’t a single person unimpressed with the design of the pocket.

The next time you are designing a sport coat, just ask for the kangaroo pocket.
